One of the great joys of life is exploring.

Think of our wine cases as a bespoke voyage, put together for you by experts, so that you can discover the hidden gems of the English wine world.

Each wine in this case is selected from small and artisanal wineries around England.

These are not wines you’ll find on the supermarket shelves. That’s because, while they are all excellent wines, they are not made in enough quantity to supply the big retailers. Indeed, many of them are only available in the locale of the winery so, unless you live nearby, you’d probably never even know they existed. Which makes them extra special.

Our case selections will change over time, partly due to those limited quantities, but mainly because it’s fun to explore and discover new experiences! So try each selection while you can. Descriptions of the wines in our current case can be found below in the extra details.

Each bottle in the case has been vetted and hand-picked by someone who really knows their way around the English wineries – our Master of Wine, Clive Barlow.

All cases come with Clive’s personal notes, sharing his knowledge on the provenance of the wines. It is your chance to discover why English wines are creating such a buzz.

Description

Chartham Pinot Noir: This light and fresh wine’s flavour delivers red cherry, red plum and a light five spice with gentle tannins and a bright finish. The style of wine makes it a refreshing aperitif, suit lightly spiced dishes or an ideal companion to charcuterie, especially meats like carpaccio, and creamy cheeses.

Biddenden Ortega: This is a tremendously good value English wine from Kent’s oldest vineyard. Off dry, fruity, displaying fresh aromas of apple and grapefruit. Semi-aromatic on the nose, displays appealing fresh aromas of green apple, grapefruit, cut grass and flora, whilst the palate is medium bodied, crisp, characterful and deliciously fruity. Delicious when served as an aperitif, this refreshing white would also pair well with lightly spicy dishes and simple seafood.

Hidden Spring Bacchus: This English wine recently won a gold medal at the WineGB awards. The wine has a beautiful aromatic character delivering lime, green apple and honeysuckle whilst the palate offers more jasmine and some tropical fruit notes. In addition, the palate is dry, fresh and also rounded and textured. There is a fine harmony of oak spice and creaminess through lees work. The oak is well integrated and allows the fruit to come through. It can definitely be drunk now but this has a potential to age over the next 3 to 5 years.

Ashling Park Cuvée: This English wine has won the 2020 WineGB Sparkling Wine Trophy and it really deserves that accolade. The aromatics display plenty of autolytic characters, biscuit, brioche, plus citrus notes and apple and honey. There is a depth to the aromatics not often found which promises a fulsome palate and long finish. On the palate there is the expected depth but great harmony and a fine mousse. It is a wine to be savoured and sipped and will partner many dishes with its combination of umami and fruit flavours. Try with a rich creamy chicken or guinea fowl dish and experience the wonderful combination of flavours, the wine working to open up the food and the fresh finish of the wine on your palate.

Bolney Classic Cuvée: The wine has a clean fresh nose with a distinct brioche and baked bread note with hints of roasted hazelnuts. The palate is medium weight, with a green apple acidity balanced by umami savouriness, yellow apple fruit and a touch of cranberry. It is long and harmonious with a gentle, persistent mousse.

Oxney Sparkling Rosé: This organic English sparkling rosé is a delicious, fresh, dry, gently-foaming wine. One can find delicate aromas of raspberry, peach and lemon on the nose and palate along with a light lees richness. This wine delivers a fresh and youthful mouthful to anyone who drinks it.

Note: Due to the small-batch artisanal nature of our wines; It’s possible that occasionally we may have to substitute a wine if it’s out of stock. But rest assured, it will be a wine of similar quality, chosen by our Master of Wine – it’s all part of the adventure!
